The War Romance of the Salvation Army All I can say is that I enjoyed this book, but then I do so love all of Grace Livingston Hill's books, & collect as many as I can & re-read them over from time to time. She has some good stories, with an inspirational point in each book. Her stories show characters that can & do live a SAVED life & the struggles they face that can help all of us to take courage from. So try not only this book but others that she has in print. I know there are well over 100 of them that she has written. I see this book has a new authors named added to Grace L. Hill's but it is the same book.Product details

The War Romance of the Salvation Army Evangeline Booth 9781375009867 Books Reviews
Great stories, heavy on religion.
I am a long time fan of Grace Livingston Hill. This is as good a read in today's world as it was when it was written. Glad to see more of her books becoming available for free on kindle. I have almost 100 of her 113 books. Waiting eagerly for more of my favorites.
Good stories but it bounces from one thing to another and at the end there is just pages of letters written to the salvation army. I loved that it was a but of heartfelt stories of our military and the salvation army and what they endured in France during the German invasion.
I got this book and couldn't put it down. For two to three weeks I would mention this book to anyone who would listen. I even called up some WW2 veterans and asked them about the Salvation Army. The ones who would talk to me praised the Salvation Army. I even loaned my IPad to a friend so she could read the book. I was amazed that the army would work hand in hand with the Salvation Army back then and now you can't even mention Jesus Christ if your in uniform. This is a fantastic book that ALL Christians should read.
The War Romance of the Salvation Army I gave this 5 stars because it is so thrilling to me to read about the unselfish and dangerous work The Salvation Army did to help and encourage our troops during World War 1. No matter the era we live in we should all do our part to show appreciation to the men and women serving our country. Because of them we can continue to enjoy the Freedom we have in our Great Nation "America"!
First, for fans of typical Grace Livingston Hill novels, let me say that the suspenseful beginning of this book is misleading, and this is not a fictional romance. Instead it is a factual, if biased, collection of anecdotes about the service given by the Salvation Army to the soldiers during the war. There is no particular character that is followed throughout the book, and very few names are given. A lot of the stories seem incomplete and we never learn the fate of most of the soldiers mentioned. Still, many of the stories are touching and sweet, and some are heartbreaking. The book is a bit over the top in its praise for the Salvation Army - one of the authors was, after all, an official of The Salvation Army.
Although no attempt is made to gloss over the cruel conditions the soldiers had to endure, or the loss of so many young lives, the book is ultimately uplifting. The authors managed to matter-of-factly convey the horrors of war without resorting to the graphic bloody descriptions so many authors rely on. This was an enjoyable way to learn about World War 1 and the original workings of the Salvation Army. I came away with a greater appreciation of our armed forces, and a longing for a time when Christianity was not compromised for the sake of being "politically correct."
I found this a very interesting read about how the Salvation Army came about & helped many soldiers during WWI. My Grandfather had told me stories about them in WWII & how much he & his fellow soldiers liked the Salvation Army as they really helped the soldiers in times of need when the Red Cross left them high & dry. (I have since heard many others say their fathers/grandfathers/uncles said the same thing.) It seems the Red Cross had the same attitude during WWI as well. The Salvation Army had rules the soldiers must abide by, but charged them nothing. Those who worked for them were hard working & devoted to Christ & to ministering to the soldiers.
